Ferrovial Construction apprentice Jack Scott crowned NCE Apprentice of the Year

On 25th November, the UK’s civil engineering rising stars were announced at the NCE Graduate and Apprentice Awards, held at the Institution of Civil Engineers in Central London.

Jay Bullock and Jack Scott, two Ferrovial Construction apprentices working on the Heathrow Q6 project delivery teams, were shortlisted from entries across the whole of the United Kingdom in the Apprentice of the Year category. Jack Scott went on to win the category which was announced at the prestigious annual ceremony.

More than 120 entries were submitted this year, which marked 25 years of the programme. Throughout this time the awards have grown stronger, more competitive and new categories been added to demonstrate and recognise the vital contribution early careers professionals make on the industry.

In their written submissions the candidates provided information about their education and careers and answered a question on the benefits of modern methods of construction.

Shortlisted candidates were required to deliver a presentation on their submission as well as be interviewed by a panel of judges comprising senior members of industry associations, clients, contractors and consultants.

Jack Scott said: “I am over the moon to have won the award and the event was such a great experience. I would like to personally thank everyone who supported me throughout the application process and these last few years of working at Ferrovial Construction. I would like to gain more experience and expand my skills from different projects in order to become a well-rounded engineer”.

Karl Goose, UK Managing Director, Ferrovial Construction: We are extremely proud of both Jay and Jack for being shortlisted and thrilled to see Jack awarded the title of Apprentice of the Year. Our early careers programmes for both apprentices and graduates are incredibly important for us not only to ensure we have a solid skills and talent pipeline for the business, but to make sure that we are shaping our operations with new ideas, perspectives and innovation for continuous development. It is excellent to see our people recognised in this way – congratulations!”

At the awards ceremony, NCE features editor Sotiris Kanaris said: “It wasn’t the sheer number of entries that made shortlisting for every category difficult but the quality of those entries, the judges said. Most candidates showcased in-depth knowledge on industry issues and strong skills. That is why all the candidates that have been shortlisted should be very proud of themselves. During their presentation and interviews these candidates showed real passion for their job and determination to help the industry become more efficient and decarbonise.”
