PLW Waterworks Awarded $166M to Expand and Improve Two Water Treatment Plants in Texas

PLW Waterworks, a division of Webber, was awarded two contracts to expand the capacity of two existing Water Treatment Plants in Pflugerville and New Braunfels.

The $146.2 million Pflugerville Water Treatment Plant project will consist of the expansion of the city’s Surface Water Treatment Plant from approximately 17 million gallons per day (MGD) to 30 MGD. This expansion will provide enough treated potable water to accommodate the future growth in the Pflugerville Service Area. With a current population of roughly 57,000, it is expected that the residents in the area will double within the next 10 years and reach 200,000 in the next 20 years.

The scope of work includes: an expansion of existing Lake Raw Water Pump Station, a pretreatment system, a membrane filtration retrofit, a new chlorine contact basin, an expansion of high service pump station, a new recycle pump station, a backwash waste clarifier, a solids and residual liquid handling system and other miscellaneous improvements. The construction of the project will begin in January 2023 with an end date of May 2026.

The second project awarded to PLW Waterworks is the expansion of the Trinity Membrane Treatment Plant and Pump Station. This $20.1 million project consists of the construction of membrane treatment equipment inside an existing Membrane Building, the construction of a new 1.5 million-gallon ground storage tank, providing and installing backwash equalization and recycle tanks, pumps and system. These improvements will expand the capacity of the plant from 3.75 MGD to 7.5 MGD.

Since there will be no full shutdowns of the plant, PLW will need to coordinate very closely with NBU to work through the partial shutdowns that will be allowed to take place. This project is important for the New Braunfels Utilities system due to the growth in population the city is experiencing. Construction of the Trinity Membrane will begin in January 2023 with expected completion in July 2024.
