  • Ferrovial, through its Construction division, was presented the P3 Transaction silver award at the 2023 National Awards for Innovation and Excellence in P3s by the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships

Ferrovial, a global infrastructure developer and operator, was recognized for excellence and innovation in public-private partnerships through its 66 Express project in the US and Ontario Line – South Civil, Stations and Tunnel Contract project in Canada. The three awards support Ferrovial’s position in developing much-needed infrastructure in North America.

The Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project in Northern Virginia was recently honored with two awards. The P3 Awards named it the Best Road, Bridge, or Tunnel Project, and the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) designated it the 2023 Public-Private Partnership (P3) Project of the Year in the Innovation of the Year category.

Representing a private investment of $3.7 billion, the multi-modal project is among the largest public-private partnership roadway infrastructure projects constructed in the United States. The Commonwealth of Virginia selected I-66 Express Mobility Partners (EMP), the consortium led by Ferrovial subsidiary Cintra, to finance, design, build, maintain and operate express lanes on Interstate 66 Outside the Beltway. Ferrovial Construction led the design-build of the 22.5-mile infrastructure. The 66 Express Lanes opened in December 2022 and have contributed nearly $5 billion in economic impact to the regional economy, according to a recent study.

“It is an honor to be recognized for successfully delivering innovative infrastructure in Northern Virginia through public-private partnerships,” said Alberto Gonzalez, CEO of Cintra US. “Thanks to the team and our partners, this transformational project is providing more efficient and reliable travel, making the region more attractive to businesses and citizens, and supporting its economic development.”

Ferrovial’s Construction division has also been recognized for its exceptional work in the field of public-private partnerships. The company received the P3 transaction silver award at the 2023 National Awards for Innovation and Excellence in P3s, presented by the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships.

The $4.3 billion Ontario Line – South Civil, Stations and Tunnel Contract  is Ferrovial’s largest construction project to ever to awarded and is being delivered using a Design-Build-Finance (DBF) P3 model.   The project  includes linking the Exhibition/Ontario Place station to the Ontario Science Centre via construction  of  3.7-miles (6-kilometers) of twin bored tunnels and seven stations, six of them underground.  Construction kicked off in 2023 and the project will employ more than 1,500 workers during the life of the project.  This is one of many contracts to deliver the Ontario Line, a 9.7 miles (15.6 kilometers) stand-alone rapid transit line that will connect the Ontario Science Centre to Exhibition/Ontario Place. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion, greenhouse gases and fuel consumption by providing an alternative transportation option.

“Ferrovial has been present in Canada for more than 20 years and this iconic project will improve access to much-needed transit in Toronto,”, said Angel Luis Sanchez, CEO of Ferrovial Construction US and Canada. “This award acknowledges  strong collaboration between private and public sectors to bring forward innovative infrastructure.”
